Extended Underground Designs
The first prototype of the extended dome design was built in Nepal under the DCS
project in 1983. The Agricultural College had over 30 cattle in a field with a shed.
The gas generated was piped to staff houses nearby.
Unfortunately, the college changed its programme after a few years and the cattle
were moved. The plant could not be fed, so it stopped being used. However, it has
survived in the field for many years and could easily be re-started, if sufficient
cattle were housed nearby again.
The growth of demand for meat and milk in Nepal in recent years has encouraged the
development of large commercial chicken farms and dairy units. In 2007, about 8 of
these larger plants have been built for such farms by local biogas plant installers
who are licensed by BSP (Biogas Sector Partnership). BSP supplied the design, as
it held the records from DCS.
The design is based on the basic dome plant that is built under the supervision of
BSP. This design uses the displacement principle to store the gas.
