Anaerobic digestion (AD), a biological, multi-purpose process, suitable for the generation of renewable energy and production of bio-fertiliser, offers valuable opportunities for rural businesses for reducing carbon emissions and applying more sustainable farming practices. The recent introduction of DEFRA’s new AD Task Group, which will lead the development of new practical measures for Government and stakeholders to achieve collective ambitions for the use of this technology, has once again highlighted AD’s significance for the rural sector.

The workshop provided an opportunity to exchange and gain information on all stages of the AD process and will bring to light the potential for the use in rural and other communities; thereby focusing on the benefits of waste management, energy and soil amendment production.

A series of presentations in the morning were followed by group discussions in the afternoon and the event facilitated ample opportunities for networking.

Speaker contributions included:

Professor Stephen Nortcliff, University of Reading - Digestate to land – Quality Standards
Dr David Fulford, Kingdom BioEnergy - Domestic Biogas in the Developing World: A Success
Dr Rebecca Arnold, Biogen Greenfinch - Examples from the ‘Ludlow’ Experience
Professor Charles Banks, Southampton University - Optimising Anaerobic Digestion
Anaerobic Digestion Workshop

‘Evaluating the potential for Anaerobic Digestion to providing energy and soil amendment’

A one-day workshop was chaired by Professor Stephen Nortcliff and Dr David Fulford. Organised by the Rural Research and Strategy Partnership and the University of Reading.
